Susie, Scout, Pumpkin & Hugo

Back in July on a sunny evening I had the pleasure of photographing Susie and her daughter Scout with their two beautiful dressage horses at their yard in Kemble.

Pumpkin the New Zealand Warmblood stands at an impressive 18.3hh and his Dutch Warmblood stable mate Hugo isn’t much far off at 17.2hh. Both horses were made to model, it was like they knew how gorgeous they both were! We also included 2yr old Jack Russell terrier Steve in the shoot, with Dad Adrian on hand to assist where needed.

Together, Susie and Scout run Thunderbird Skin, offering handcrafted, natural skin care from their base in the Cotswolds – it is seriously gorgeous stuff!

We played around with some black background style shots, trying to get some interesting and artistic images of their beautiful horses, whilst also getting those classic portrait shots to really highlight their partnership.

I get lot’s of interesting requests on photoshoots, from “can I get a shot of my Shetland in the kitchen?” or “my husband loves cricket, can I get a shot of him with his horse and cricket bat?”. The answer is always YES – I want your images to be a true reflection of your life with your horses and other animals. So when Susie said she wanted to recreate her favourite image of her daughter and her dressage horse Pumpkin, I was immediately keen!

And when she showed me the photo of the majestic Pumpkin with a pair of riding gloves on their ears, I instantly knew this was my favourite request ever on an equine photoshoot.

For this shot, I wanted the comical juxtaposition of Scout looking smart in their jacket and riding boots, sat elegantly on a chair, with Pumpkin standing proud…but with the added silliness of glove ears!

Susie and Scout loved this image so much they added it to their collection of framed pieces.

Susie borrowed Scout’s jacket and put on a pair of killer heels for these BEAUT shots with Pumpkin – so stunning!

At Susie & Scout’s viewing we honestly could have kept talking for ages about horses – this is one of the reasons I love my job so much; I get to connect with like-minded people who just love everything horses bring to their life and want to share this amazing knowledge and passion.
