Keep your cool on your Summer equine photoshoot

With this glorious heatwave we are having, I thought I would share my top tips for making the most out of your sunny summer equine photoshoot.

There is a lot to love about summer equine photoshoots; horse’s coats are gleaming, muddy fields are replaced with long grass and wildflowers, you have greater flexibility with your wardrobe choices and the weather is (generally!) more consistent.

  • I recommend choosing a shoot time early in the morning or evening to avoid the heat of the day – with the long days we are having you could have your shoot start at 6am or finish at 8.30pm and still have plenty of light. This way everyone avoids getting hot and bothered!
  • Another bonus of having your shoot early or later in the day, is you get the most beautiful, flattering soft light (‘golden hour’) that gives your images that extra special something. I find between 6am – 10am or 4pm – 8pm is usually the most stunning.
  • Make sure your horse is comfortable by applying fly spray before the shoot and have it to hand to top up as we go.
  • Keep hydrated, take breaks and wear sun screen! It seems obvious but it is easy to forget to look after yourself amongst the excitement of shoot day. I always make sure to take time to give my clients and their horses time to take a break and have a drink, and keep checking in to make sure everyone is comfortable. Plus I always have sunscreen and water in my car should you need it.
